Patient Stories

Derek, Medical Care Patient

Derek, Medical Care Patient

Derek has been a Lackey patient for about 10 years, at least, for the most part. For a brief period, he had insurance and his own doctor. “Then, when I lost my insurance again, I remember that I was happy to return to Lackey because I remembered how they really cared. You can tell that the Lord is alive there”, he says.

Derek has enjoyed good health for the most part but he has had several bends in the road along his health journey that began with dental issues requiring an extraction and several fillings. “That’s when I first came to the clinic”.

A number of years later Derek began to have recurrent bouts of diverticulitis and after his fourth episode, which prompted a general surgery referral by the Lackey provider, he underwent surgery for a partial colon resection.

More recently, he has developed an unusual bothersome issue with his upper eyelid becoming inverted. “It makes my eye always feel like it’s scratched”. When he came to the Lackey clinic he was seen initially by the Lackey provider and, with the help of a slit lamp exam and a cell phone consultation with the Lackey volunteer ophthalmologist, a diagnosis was made. He has since been seen by the VCU ophthalmology department and is scheduled for surgery next month to have his lid repaired.

When asked, “Was there a particular visit or time when you were at Lackey that stands out for you”, Derek was quick to reply in the affirmative. “One day I came to the clinic first thing. I was kind of a new believer at that time and one of the staff came into my room and asked if I would like to join them in prayer. That experience just made me feel closer to the Lord”, he said.

Derek talks about how he believes that a good doctor-patient relationship is founded on trust. He remembers how the trust he has felt at Lackey led him to open up about issues in his life that he might otherwise not have had to courage to discuss.

We love to hear stories like these. As our cofounder, Cooka Shaw remarked, “they keep us marching onward.”

“You have to talk to your patients and then really listen to what their saying.” That is Derek’s advice to health care providers. Derek has been a Lackey patient for most of the last 10 years and he spoke recently about how he believes that a good doctor-patient relationship is founded on trust.  He remembers how the trust he has developed at Lackey allowed him to open up about issues in his life that he might otherwise not have had to courage to discuss.

During the course of his time as a patient at Lackey, Derek has received dental care including extractions and several cavities filled, was referred to have colon surgery for recurrent diverticulitis and most recently, after an ophthalmology work up at the clinic, is posted for surgery to have a partially inverted eyelid repaired at MCV.
